English Proficiency Exam Waiver

All students who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents for whom English is not their first language must submit test scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. There are additional cases where we may choose to waive this requirement based on a student’s unique circumstances. We will waive the English proficiency exam requirement if you will meet at least one of the following conditions by the time you would enroll at UNC:

You will have lived for at least the last four years (including this year) in a country where English is the primary language.
You will have attended a school where English is the primary language of instruction for at least the last four years (including your current academic year) prior to enrolling at UNC.

If you do not meet either condition, please clearly explain your situation and why you believe you qualify for a waiver of this exam requirement. Note that we do not waive this requirement based on SAT, ACT or AP exam scores, or on grades in completed coursework.

If you qualify for a waiver and have already submitted your application for upcoming Fall admission, you can expect this to be waived from your MyCarolina portal application checklist within 5 business days of you submitting this form. If you have not yet submitted your application, please allow 5 business days for this requirement to be waived from the MyCarolina portal checklist after you have submitted your application. If you do not qualify for a waiver based on the conditions listed above, you can expect a response from our team on whether or not we can grant you an exam waiver within 5 business days.
