I will be helping to moderate this chat today. Our speakers will keep an eye on what I highlight here, and I'll try to select questions that are coming up frequently from you all. We will do our best to cover as many questions as we are able in our allotted time! If you have any questions that were not answered today please email us at carolinaaway@unc.edu
Excellent well hello everyone. Thank you so much for joining us for this webinar about Carolina away. We're really excited that you've chosen to be part of the Tar Heel community and we are just so grateful that you're taking the time to learn more about this opportunity as a way of still starting your journey as a Carolina student.
My name is Michael Davis and the associate director of recruitment within the office of undergraduate admissions. I've actually been here at the University for about five years now, and while I myself am not an alarm of the institution, I did in fact Marion along, so I'd like to say that I married my way into the community.
And I'll be moderating our conversation during this session. I'd like to go ahead and ask the other presenters to introduce themselves. Cliff, if you wouldn't mind going next.
Hi everyone, my name is Erica. I am a rising senior from Charlotte, NC.
City, would you like to go next?
is Sony. TI am also a rising senior on from Cary, NC and Miami. Clinical Lab science major.
Hey y'all, I'm Ben styles are also rising senior from Black Mountain, NC double major in public policy in economics.
Excellent, thank you all and thank you for being here with us today.
OK, I'm sorry, I think that I went to the next slide. Can you'll see that the slide just change fellow presenters and it now says welcome at the top. OK, excellent sorry my computer is giving me a weird
Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't kind of thing so wonderful just to let.
No, this webinar is going to be recorded and we will be posting it on the Carolina away website.
We encourage you to go ahead and begin submitting your questions in the chat window and will answer them at the end of the session. You've already seen that we have another colleague here with us, Chloe Russell, who has posted some helpful tips regarding technical issues as well as just ways to submit questions so she'll be keeping an eye on the chat box for us.
Sorry I am struggling to go to the next slide.
Hello presenters, as the slide changed or is it still on the same thing? No.
Thinking very, very hard about.
OK, wonderful, thank you and thank you everyone for living through our technical challenges with us during this webinar.
But we were in this together, so we're going to start this conversation with the high level overview of Carolina away. Then Cliff will share more about classes advising and how will help you to develop your strengths and really thrive during your first semester as a Carolina student will also touch on the exciting new courses and learning communities that will focus on urgent contemporary issues of society, politics, economics, culture and science that have been really revealed by the global response.
Our students throughout will be sharing their experiences, taking virtual Carolina classes this past spring as part of that discussion.
Um, Clifford, then continue and talk a little bit more about building community at Carolina. And of course, our students will also share their experiences. Having done that as part of the community.
And will conclude the session with just some frequently asked questions that have already come up as well as what we know about the future transition back to a residential experience after participating in Carolina away at that time. As I mentioned, we'll go ahead and address the questions that you all have submitted.
going to attempt to move to the next slide once more.
Fellow presenters did the slide change or no, it did OK, just so you'll know. I'm still actually viewing the first slide of the presentation as the active ones, so thank you for letting me know what's going on.
So through Carolina away, you'll be part of a learning community and you'll connect with other students who are also in those learning communities will also be connecting with faculty and staff through this as well. Our hope is that you'll form friendships through small group experiences, both those experiences that are connected to your courses but also through more social opportunities.
This is a new program for us and we're building it and we're going to ask your input in terms of what we should be doing. How should we design this so that you can really connect with the Tar Heel community and still have a great semester even though it might look a little different than we had originally thought? We want to emphasize that we're in this together and we really are committed to making sure that you're able to join our community.
I think it's also important to note that through Carolina away, you'll be taking a full course load, so you're going to stay right on track in terms of completing your Carolina degree.
I'd like to go ahead and turn it over to Cliff now, talk more about the Carolina away coursework.
Thanks Michael. So the coursework for Carolina way will include high quality digital versions of the courses that are normally offered on campus. You'll likely be taking around 15 credit hour during the semester and we know many of you are curious about the specific courses that will that will be offered through Carolina way. I want you to know we're working really **** ** this and we're excited to be able to share a comprehensive course list in the coming weeks. Today we are able to share the framework for what your fall schedule would look like.
So the first course, as you can see on the screen, is English 105 and this is our English composition. An rhetoric course at Carolina and this is of course that every single student has to take. This is a foundational course that prepares you for the rigorous academic writing expected across the university's Department's the second course you see is education 101, and this is a really excellent courses, especially for new first year students, because it helps you to build your strength to thrive in Carolina while introducing you to arrange a specialized learning and research opportunities.
That represent the true strengths of Carolina as a part of these 15 hours or so, you'll also be able to take three classes and what we refer to as early pathways, and these early pathway courses are courses that begin course sequences and STEM fields. They fulfill common general education requirements, and they can also meet requirements and popular majors. The other category that we have listed, our exploration courses and these are courses that may also meet general education requirements, but they also allow you to explore new fields of study across the diversity and discipline.
Offered at you and see. Now if you've already attended orientation, you know this coursework mirrors the type of schedule we recommend for students who are taking courses on campus. So we've tailored this academic plan to encompass those same critical elements, balance and variety exploration of courses in your major an other areas of interest, completion of general education requirements, and developing skills that would prepare you to be a successful student at UNC. Ultimately, we want you to come in. Be excited about your courses.
To a great start at Carolina and we believe this coursework allows you to do exactly that. So sinisi Eric and Erica advance. Can you tell us a little about a little bit about your online experience from courses in the spring?
Yeah, so the shift was kind of sudden, but I say that a lot of my professors that are really good job adapting and recognizing that everyone situation is going to be a little bit different. So for example, in one of my neuroscience classes that I was in I had some problems like troubleshooting an exam that was being administered and my professor worked with me one on one like night with me over zoom and we kind of worked out a different way that I could take the exam so that it was fair across the board.
A man she also required us to attend classes at the same time as we usually did, but she also offered another version of that to be like recorded. So if you weren't able to make it if you were in a different time zone or anything like that, or you had technical difficulties on the transition was really smooth.
I'd say for me it was half my classes were just like normal, almost there there's this like smaller lecture based ones. We had our lecture regular time as it would normally super query for those who couldn't make it, and everything which is virtually just like we were virtual classroom, but others kind of went a completely different direction. One of my research development classes we like super small group. We had all these little side projects that went on 'cause you professor realize that the way the class normally worked would not work at all if we were online and so we had smaller groups, smaller projects. He redid the entire syllabus.
Actually, even more of that class. I'm not normally if I was just in a regular classroom setting.
So farming is growing nice as well because I thought it was really great how quickly all my professors gold or content online at one classes started up again and for me we didn't have those live lectures anymore. Are professors just put up all their content online and we could watch it at our own pace? But we did still have proctored exams, but the fact that they got all their power points and recorded lectures up so quickly, I didn't feel like I was unprepared for any of the exams in the finals that came through out.
Thank you offer that inside now the final type. Of course that makes up your Carolina way. Experience is actually one that I'm really excited to talk about and these are our code. Would investigations an learning communities. They're very unique courses and they address urgent contemporary issues. These courses will look at the impact of COVID-19 and the global response through a particular lens. These courses will meet each week for one hour and they will also feature a special guest speaker each week from University faculty researchers.
Community experts and skilled practitioners. You have the opportunity to explore new issues of society, politics, economics, culture and science. While discussing these pressing questions with your fellow students. The question structure and these experts, the courses you see on the screen are only examples of what may be offered. So, for example, if a course like speed science was offered, students may hear from a public health administrator, but the benefits and risks of disseminating early experiments results.
And the role of partnerships among scientists, private companies, and government agencies. Additionally, these courses will connect you with student groups. An academic departments, research centers or institutes, all of which serve as a supportive home for pursuing future interests at UNC. And so this is one of the defining experiences and courses of the program, and one that we are currently in development of and feel very, very excited about.
Now at UNC, we believe that the defining element of Carolina is certainly the people and Carolina away will allow you to connect both with students within Carolina way an those physically on campus as well as with faculty, staff and alums of the University. You're probably already figuring out how to stay connected with your friends during this time of social distancing, so we definitely acknowledge that. But making new friends at the University while studying in a virtual campus will present both challenges and opportunities. We're currently working on plans.
For pairing you with a mentor to help you build connections, incorporated community building activities, an identifying student, organizations with remote participation opportunities, and will also welcome your ideas too. So definitely be thinking you also have dedicated, comprehensive and holistic advising. Support a team of student support professionals will help you develop your strings as you navigate the transit transition to the University both during your time in the Carolina way program. An once you begin the residential experience.
In Chapel Hill, so for our students in DC, Erica advance. How are you able to stay connected during the spring semester?
I think one really great resource that helped me stay connected, at least with my classmates, was the use of like breakout sessions and additional sessions that were added on top of regular, regularly scheduled class times. So that way I was able to meet with my smaller groups consistently throughout the semester and we were able to kind of check in with each other and see how are studying is going and how we felt about the exam coming up. And we also had additional projects that kind of help keep us.
A little more united, so I also took a lab on this past semester and my lab group met regularly over zoom and we had to work on a group paper instead of what are normal project would have been so we had to just kind of have those constant checkins with each other.
Yeah, my major is pretty small. It's about 18 people, so we all kind of know each other already, but we just ended up using our group that we had made in the beginning of the year. A lot more. I know that all of us hopped on like a group zoom or a group FaceTime call when we needed to study for exams and that was super helpful because I still got to have that connection with my classmates even if we weren't. Even if we didn't get to be together in the classroom and lab.
Thank you and I actually gonna turn it back over to Michael who will discuss some topics that you may be thinking about.
I'm not gonna lie. Ambassador superlatives sounds like a highly entertaining topic and I cannot wait to hear.
What decisions were made just for the record, so we didn't want to talk just quickly about a couple of frequently asked questions. The first one, round tuition and financial aid, and so we want to let you know that as soon as we know that you'd like to participate in finance, excuse me. Participate in Carolina away. The Office of scholarships and student aid will review your current financial aid package to see what adjustments need to be made.
And if there are adjustments, they'll then email you and let you know that that new packages available in your students enter in connect Carolina. We do know that tuition will remain the same for Carolina away. We're still waiting on the question of fees because University is still solidifying which services make sense based on the Carolinas weight program and so as soon as that is finalized, will let everyone know. We know that the.

Hi everyone! If you're having trouble with sound or video, please refresh your screen or try an alternate browser. We’ve found that Firefox or Google Chrome may work best!
These will not be more than is already published for the residential experience.
And this is probably pretty obvious, but I'll mention it anyway. If you are participating in Carolina away, you will not have the cost of the residence Hall in the dining plan here on campus.
On the second topic, it's really for a global students, an first. We're sorry that everything is really tough right now and really kind of up in the air and unclear.
Based on the information that we know at this time, we think that Carolina away is probably the best option for you to begin your Carolina journey. Unfortunately, we think that most newly admitted students will not be able to get a visa.
In time for the start of the fall semester, given the US Department of State suspension of Visa Services as well as different travel restrictions.
I might also mention two that if you are a student who is transferring from another institution within the United States, you may have additional considerations regarding weather Carolina away is the best option for you or not. And if you're one of those students, I definitely encourage you to reach out to the office of international student and scholar services at UNC there. Happy to provide additional information I just mentioned to that for all of our global students. Whether you're.
You first your student transferring from another institution. That office is more than happy to talk to you, and they have a lot of great insight into some of the challenges that we face in.
Cliff, I will turn it back over to you to talk about our last night. Thank you.
Thank you very much, so we'd still love for your family to get involved in the Carolina community, as that's an important component of the student experience that you won't see as well. There will be a variety of opportunities to get involved, ranging from volunteering to tuning into a special web series specifically for family members, so more information to come regarding that. So stay tuned there.
And looking ahead, see chicken.
And looking ahead to the future semester when you enroll residentially in Chapel Hill, you'll continue to gather, join discussions, attend events, and plan collaborations with other Tar Heels who participated in Carolina away. We're also committed to continuing care Carolina way for as long as is needed. And so we look forward to welcoming everyone in Chapel Hill as soon as everyone is able to. As soon as that is deemed appropriate, Michael.
Yeah, so in terms of just letting us know your plans, whether you're planning to participate in Carolina away or or still planning to enroll residentially in August, we ask that you just let us know and to do so you can just log in to connect Carolina using your onion and select the tile that's label. Let us know your plans for fall term. I know that there were some students for him that tile was not appearing in your connect.
Carolina, I believe that our it teams now resolved that, so everyone should have access to that tile at this time. If for some reason you still don't see it, please email us. Let us know if you can include your pid number. That would be really helpful. That way we can see exactly what the issue is and resolve it for you.
And we are asking that you let us know your plans by next Tuesday, June 30th. We know this is a tight turn around. We're asking this of all enrolling students so that we can arrange course selections, residential arrangements, and most importantly, get everyone's financial aid packages updated. Please note that if you do change your mind after next Tuesday, that's totally fine. This is not a binding decision. You will have the ability to go in throughout the month of July.
Questionnaire in connect Carolina we would ask you that if you do change your mind to let us know as soon as possible just so that we can try and accommodate everyone through courses, residential accommodations, etc.
And so, um. Finally, just really thank you for joining us again. We hope that this was helpful information for you, and we certainly want to hear from you as you come across additional questions or concerns the Carolina away at unc.edu is the best email to reach us at a group of us are monitoring that inbox. That way we can get the right expert to answer.
Your question as quickly as possible, so I know that we've had questions.
Coming through the chat and I believe that Chloe will be.
Pushing them forward so that.
Our panel can answer them.
Hi everyone and how can you get here?
A great so before I start to push questions over, I just wanted to say that there are lot of questions. I think that some things were uhm.
It's it is confusing about the types, of course. Is an registration. And so with Michael and clip don't mind just so I can kind of not go through and try to figure out who's question, um, addresses everything. But essentially what we're doing with the course is is that we're trying to give students around it out. Schedule of 15 credit hours so that everyone is making progress towards graduation, regardless of how they're coming into the University, right?
And in thinking about your early pathway courses versus explorations, there will be a variety, of course. Is there that I can tell you? Right now? We can't say anything definitively because what we're trying to do is the University is determine where our resources are best used. So a lot of this does depend on demand, but I can tell you right now. For those of you who've been interested in, does it fulfill a Gen Ed? Will I be able to be on track with my Manger?
Um can I still take the same courses that I would have taken on campus um more likely than not the answer is yes so we're planning to offer courses in Carolina way such as biology 10110 101 store 155 econ 101 of course English 105 Spanish options map 231.
113 I mean, I know I just named a lot of science is uhm, but I just wanted to make sure that people understood that it is. It is a courses that allow the most paths outward, right? So Y con 101 is used from everything from journalism to Poly, side of public policy to sports admin. So we're looking at that for the transferability of your courses and then in terms of explorations, they could still fulfill some type of Gen Ed.
But also, that's where we would be getting more into upper level classes or courses that can fill lots of other requirements. So it could be something like I'm common 40, which is introduction in media history or human Physiology or psychopathology, which is like 2:45. So again, the list is still being built out, so we appreciate your patience. The universities working really hard to come up with this.
In terms of registration for first year, students were hoping that you'll be able to register for Carolina away classes when you register with your way for orientation, right? So that would be in July. Uhm, when your dates come and if you decide to want to be in the program, then.
We would provide you more guidance at that time. Uhm, and then there was one other question about registration. Sorry I got so sidetracked talking about it. 'cause there's so many questions. Uhm, will all of the classes that are listed in the course catalog be available to Carolina way students? So it is not that.
It it really depends. I should say the other answer to that question is Carolina way students are not limited to only Carolina away specific classes right? So the the point of Carolina way is to have an online experience so that we can build community together and.
So if you are registering for class, that is a high flex option or a class that is remote only and it's not on the Carolina away list, that's going to be perfectly fine.
So now I'm going to meet myself and start sending over questions. Thank you all for allowing me to come take over the Q&A for a little bit.
Absolutely no. Thank you. Chloe Ann. I think we just want to really emphasize two points that Chloe touched on. One we see this program very much is helping you reach your degree. So we are going to be offering courses that you need to start exploring your interest. Start taking those courses.

Hi! Based on your presentation, Carolina Away seems ike a great program, especially in this situation. However, I was wondering what a freshman student would be missing by not being on campus on an academic level and instead taking part in remote learning?
That will lead to the major that you already know you want. If you're in that. If you're in that camp, I think it's also important to note that even if you are still planning to come residentially to campus, it is highly likely that all students will be taking some online courses and then there will be some hybrid courses on campus. Given the impact of this pandemic and we're anticipating that there will be no large lectures whatsoever on campus this fall and so everyone is going to be taking courses.
Crossing different mediums this fall.
So the first question I was wondering what a freshman student would be missing by not being on campus on an academic level, an instead taking part in remote learning.
Um Cliff, is that something you would feel comfortable answering first?
Sure, absolutely thank you so much for that question, and I think the answer to that is it depends. As we know the on campus experience this fall at UNC is going to look very different than it has in previous semesters and hopefully in future semesters as well. And so we were really intending to build this program to provide students with this many opportunities to to engage with one another and with organizations and programming as possible through support and resources and its connection with other students in similar situations.
We are, as we mentioned, we are working to pair all of our Carolina way students with a mentor, a student on campus who's kind of experience a little bit of campus life to really help you make those connections, but also identifying specific organizational opportunities that have remote possibilities. And so that's something that we're really building. And that's one of the benefits of Carolina ways different than only taking remote classes. But we really are trying to build an experience where you feel very connected to the Carolina.
Community as well as the Carolina away community.
I'm actually wondering, as an add on to that.
Would our current students mind explaining again the concept of office hours and maybe how that translated to a virtual space?
Chloe Russell
04:33:15 PM
Is Carolina away open for transfer students admitted to the Business Program?
Yeah, so personally, I really took advantage of the office hours at my professors had. Just because you could tell they were really concerned about that transition over and making sure that it was as smooth as possible. So they opened up a lot of their office hours. You know, usually they would only have it.
Maybe one time a week and you have to sign up for a 15 minute time slot and in this situation it was kind of just email me and we'll set up a time for whatever works for you. I actually talked to a few of my professors for probably 30 minutes at a time I kind of related to them. My struggles with like how I used to study versus how I have to study now and they kind of helped me develop strategies to help me with that.

I am a transfer student and a rising junior. If I would choose to participate in Carolina away, is it a requirement to take away the Carolina away cources because I finished the general education cources.
So for me on what my professors did was, like Erica said, they extended a lot of their office hours to include a few days a week or maybe longer time periods. But not only that, but it was also a really great way to just kind of socialize. Like we wouldn't just go to office hours, just talk to the professor, but we could just see our classmates and talk to her classmates. We don't even necessarily have questions. When we went to office hours, it was just a great way to see our professors and our peers.
Julie DeVoe
04:34:27 PM
How will students find out about and engage with student organizations?
Thank you both, Vance anything to add or.
Pretty much same experience from your photos.
Excellent so I saw a couple of questions regarding is Carolina away open for transfer students?
Really kind of both of these two questions. So yes, Carolina away is very much an option for transfer students. The only exceptions right now are students who are junior transfers to four programs, bio, medical and Health Sciences Engineering Clinical Lab Science.
Radiologic science and nursing. Because those four programs have some courses that students generally need to take at the beginning of their junior year that have really in person requirements right now it seems like Carolina away is not the best option if you are. If you are coming into the University as a junior, transfer to those four program specifically, we'd really encourage you to actually reach out directly to your Department.
Luis Adame Agustiniano
04:35:48 PM
Will Carolina Away be offered the second semester?
Come and talk to them about what the best options are. We would encourage you to also go ahead and still complete the survey and connect Carolina and let us know what you thinking as now, but for all other transfer students, Carolina away is absolutely a great option for you.
Our Next One is how well students find out about and engage with student organizations.
Ved Sunil
04:36:23 PM
Is the course registration process any different for Carolina away?
Um, very quickly, I'll just mention. Hopefully some of you have already made connections or have already participated in the online community at Carolina. If you haven't and you don't know how to access it, please again, send us an email and we can get you connected there. Many of our student organizations will continue to post information in that space. I don't know if anyone else on the panel has insight into what student Orgs are planning and would like to share.
Yeah, so I'm apart of two organizations on campus that are still going to be holding like applications and kind of like pubbing those through their social media outlets and definitely using the like he'll life portal that has all the different clubs and organizations on them so they are going to be still doing that. And they're also going to be hosting all of the stuff that we would usually do in person over zoom or other platforms so that you can stay continuously engaged.
There's a lot of these groups are more than 10 people, so they wouldn't be able to meet any other way otherwise.
OK, so the next question will Carolina away the offered the second semester or the spring semester? To be honest with you were not sure because we simply have no idea what the world is going to look like. Come January, however, we are certainly committed to continuing to provide the really flexible options students need to continue their Carolina degree. So it's.
I think entirely possible that yes, Carolina away will still be going strong in the spring. Were hoping, of course, that everything will be resolved in everyone can join us residential in January.
That's very optimistic. So you know we are committed to continuing this, and I would mention two that it may be the type of thing that some students can come in January. Maybe others need to do another semester in Carolina? Way that's totally fine. As Cliff talked about earlier, really, whenever you are able to join us residential in Chapel Hill, you'll still be forming those connections and really getting together with the folks that you met through Carolina away. Even as you're making new friends.
Now the next question is the course registration process any different for Carolina away Cliff?
Cesar Alfaro
04:38:45 PM
If I opt for Carolina away for fall semester would I be able to live on campus on Spring semester in the dorm I am currently assigned
Andrew Bryant
04:39:05 PM
How can I find out if the classes I want to take are going to be available through Carolina Away? I don't want to sign up for it in the next 5 days and then find out the courses I want to take are not available. Also, will there be a difference in courses offered online on campus versus carolina away courses?
Absolutely. So there actually is no difference as far as when you and how you will register for classes. So for incoming freshmen students, you're still going to register even through the Carolina wave program, the same way that you would register if you were registering for on campus classes. So it's based on when you attend the orientation that date you were given when you register for orientation that you learned about during orientation is still going to apply to Carolina way students as we develop that course list. We're going to work with the registrar's office and provide guidance to students.
Help you all specifically identify which courses are Carolina away courses so that you're aware of that, but the actual process and dates and times for registering for classes is not going to be different than other incoming first year students.
Kaival Patel
04:39:29 PM
Are there any required courses we must take during Carolina Away?
Yash Patel
04:39:51 PM
Will our courses count in our GPA?
Just look thanks clip. The next question is if I up for Carolina way for fall semester, would I be able to live on campus in spring semester in the dorm I'm currently assigned? So if you do opt for Carolina away we are going to ask you to cancel your housing contract because we certainly do not want you to be paying for housing when you're not physically here. If you are able to come for spring housing, you let our housing office know that.
Aubrey Clark
04:40:12 PM
As a transfer with most gen ed courses completed, would it be advised to not participate in Carolina away?
And we're going to work to accommodate everyone. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that it's going to be in the same residence called that you currently been assigned. Certainly if there are spaces available, we will do our best to get you there, but unfortunately we're not able to guarantee that specifically for this.
Sona Sahakyan
04:40:19 PM
Will the COVID-related classes cover some of the general education requirements?
Next question, how can I find out the classes I want to take are going to be available through Carolina away? I don't want to sign up for it in the next 5 days and then find out the courses I want to take or not available. Totally understandable and then will there be a difference in courses offered online on campus versus Carolina awake courses? Cliff? Would you like to speak to that?
Sure, and so right now the University is going through the process of completely updating the entire course catalog, and that's kind of where we're grappling with what courses are going to be going to be offered, in which ones aren't, and so once that process takes place, we will make that information available through our website and through our interactions via email as well. So you'll know as soon as we know which courses are going to be specifically offered through Carolina way. We're kind of waiting for a couple.
A couple other factors, information to make those decisions and once we do like I said that information will be publicly shared as far as there being a difference between courses offered online, an Carolina way courses as we talked a little bit about for those Carolina way courses are going to have some level of community and engagement that maybe the general online courses won't. That being said, Carolina way students will have an opportunity to take courses that are online that are outside of the Carolina away experience specifically. So there is a bit of a difference but.
That doesn't prevent you from taking those courses outside of the program.
Thanks Cliff, If I can ask you to answer the next two questions. So are there any required courses we must take during Carolina away? And then Secondly, will our courses count in our GPA?
Absolutely. So there are some courses that we have very intentionally built into this program, and the ones that we specifically mentioned earlier. So English 105 that English composition and rhetoric course if you don't already have credit for it will be of course that you'll say during your fall semester, and it's a great time to take it because that is of course that will help prepare you for the academic writing that.

If I do Carolina away and I live in Chapel Hill. Is it still possible to take advantage of on-campus resources?
Is it expected in all of your courses? So that's a question. Feel very strongly about. Also, education 101 is another course that you would take, and that's one that really is designed to give you the skills to help you thrive and be successful at you and see thru resources and strategies for success. And then Lastly, we have the COVID-19 investigations courses and that's just a one credit hour course, so it doesn't take up much of your schedule, but that is something that students will also take as a part of Carolina Way. And then the rest of the courses you take to get to that 15 hours.

Hello - I wanted to ask can I start Carolina Away and then switch when I make it onto campus ?
Are really up to you and kind of your interests. The pathways you like to pursue, an kind of general education courses you'd like to explore in as well as far as courses counting in your GPA, yes, absolutely. Everything of course you take at UNC in general will count towards your GPA. And these courses aren't a different. So of course you take as a part of Carolina way will still factor into your GPA that you will carry with you throughout your time that you want to see.
I'm so the next question is as a transfer with most Gen Ed courses completed, would it be advised to not participate in Carolina way? So our recommendation really is you should decide whether it participated Carolina away based on whether you are able to or comfortable with coming physically to campus or not. If you are still able to uncomfortable coming residentially to Carolina and being on campus regularly.
The Carolina away maybe is not the best option for you. If for any reason though you are not comfortable with being on campus or you're not able to get here again, regardless of whether you're an entering first year student or a transfer student, even a junior transfer with most Gen eds completed, we would say Carolina away is probably your best is probably the best option for you because it's Cliff said you'll be able to take courses that are outside of kind of the Carolina away umbrella.
But you'll still get the benefits of that community building in that connection to the Tar Heel target community.
Um, this next one I think Cliff is going to be for U as well. Well, the Covid related classes cover some of the general education requirements.

04:44:48 PM
What is going to happen with work-study related to our financial aid? How will we do this?
Yeah, and that's that's something that of course and I had to keep saying it. But still to be determined. It is just a one credit hour course. Of course that meets once a week for an hour, and so usually those types of courses don't meet general education requirements and really just count towards the hours you need for graduation in which he is still very important. But that information, like I said, is still to be determined and we hope to provide that information as soon as possible.
I didn't get the question here. OK, if I do Carolina away and I live in Chapel Hill, is it still possible to take advantage of on campus resources? Yes, so if you are living.
In Chapel Hill or within driving distance of campus. If you do participate in Carolina away instead of moving residentially onto campus, yes, you will still be able to participate in some on campus activities. I would strongly encourage you to go out to the Carolina away website and click the links that take you to the community standards and what everyone will have to agree to to come onto campus and make sure you're comfortable with those requirements, because those requirements.
Andrew Draper
04:45:56 PM
Is EDUC 101 a 3 credit hour or a 1 credit hour course?
Will apply whether you were living residentially on campus. Whether your coming on campus just for some classes or just coming on campus to take advantage of resources or attend small events or student organization meetings, everyone in the community will be asked to abide by those same requirements.

I've already registered for fall semester courses, but if I opt to join Carolina Away now and change my mind in July, will I lose my place in the classes I had previously registered for?
OK, um I wanted to ask can I start Carolina away and then switch when I make it onto campus? So the commitment to Carolina away is for the full semester. Students will not be able to change kind of midway through. So if you do participate in Carolina away that will be for the entire fall semester. Depending on again kind of what the world looks like in January. You will then be able to reassess at that time.
Whether you Carolina away or come residentially onto campus.
The next question is what is going to happen with work study related to our financial aid? How will we do this? This is a great question and I think that this actually is relevant to all students. Whether you're doing Carolina away or not, the University is still going to have a wide.
Array of positions for work study. Students across different departments a significant amount of that work probably will be virtual, especially for the fall semester and potentially for awhile there after. I can speak specifically about the office of admissions we typically higher. I would guess around 25 to 30 students and work study rolls every year. We are anticipating hiring pretty much the same number of students because they're going to just be able to.
Help us with tasks from wherever they are located. I don't know if any of our students. I'm sorry I don't know if any of you have jobs on campus that continued in the spring on outside of the ambassador program. But Cliff, I don't know if you also have work. Study students that you know, OK, never mind. So I am the work study expert at the moment because I get to work with our fantastic students, so it's definitely open to Carolina away students.
His education 101 A three credit hour or a one credit hour course.
So actually it's a two credit hour course, so right there in the middle. So fear following along at home English 105. Three credit hours education 101 Sioux credit hours and the code would investigations course will be one credit hour. Your math is probably better than mine, but that's six credit hours, which leaves you with nine credit hours old, are generally three courses for early pathways and explorations.
I have to say too. I really enjoyed our student responses to the two credit thing that was fantastic to throw me watching you all, I really enjoyed that.
OK, so the next question I've already registered for fall semester courses, but if I opted to join Carolina away now and change my mind in July, will I lose my place in the classes I had previously registered for?
Cliff, if you would like to wait in that one.
Yes, of course. So understanding we will not drop you from courses that you are registered for it just because you indicated your interest in Carolina away or plan to participate in Carolina way. You really have the authority over your schedule for the fallen. So at the point where you feel confident in making changes into your schedule to encompass the include the Carolina way courses and experience, that is really your decision to make and you can as you can make changes to.
Your your file plans until the end of July. You can continue making changes to your schedule even through the first week of classes. Of course, just for all students, and so you have autonomy over your schedule. You have authority to make those changes. We won't drop you from him, but we will recommend the courses that you need if you are a part of our program.
I know we have a few more minutes on our time together, so Chloe were there other questions?

Here's an easier way to think about Carolina Away...hopefully! Carolina Away students can chose from a variety of courses that are reserved only for Carolina Away students. They can also
Chloe has added a statement for us. Here's an easier way to think about Carolina away. Carolina away students can choose from a variety of courses that are reserved for Carolina Troy students and they can also.

04:50:39 PM
take high-flex option or online only courses too!
I'm really excited about this anticipation. What is coming next?
They can also take high flex option or online only courses too.
So basically you get the both of you get the best of both worlds.
Is that a fair way of saying that Cliff?
Thank you Chloe for putting that in it really.
Easy to understand way for us.
Chloe Russell
04:51:15 PM
There are MANY questions about being limited in options. You actually have more options!
So close said there are many questions about being limited in options. You actually have more options for a a home, which I think is actually again a really good point because so many of our classes are going to be offered virtually even for those students who are living residentially on campus this fall.
Chloe Russell
04:51:56 PM
So what's different? COVID-19 required courses and dedicated advising support.
Yeah, and So what you all have is different than the general student. Student population is access specifically to these Carolina way courses. In addition to all of the other courses that will be offered, University.
Brandon Garcia
04:52:18 PM
Is there a part-time option for taking classes through Carolina Away? i.e., 2-3 classes rather than 15 credit hours
It's Chloe, so what's different then? So exactly Carolina away has the COVID-19 courses and dedicated advising support. I think that I will speak briefly about both of those one. I personally just need covid courses are super exciting. I actually kind of want to take them myself, so maybe I will just drop in and participate some, knowing Cliff and Chloe, and really amazing people.
And advising having them as dedicated supports for you throughout this process.
Really is is a true benefit to the Carolina away program.
OK, so the next question is, is there a part time option for taking classes through Carolina away IE two to three classes rather than 15 credit hours?
Click would you like to speak to that?
Yeah, I'm actually going to defer to Chloe. I think she popped up to potentially answer that question.
Maybe how everyone, UM, I I did not pop up to answer that question actually, but I can so we're still working through the details. But the bigger thing is we want students to be on track for graduation, right? And we also don't want students to stress. So yes, is the 15 hours of strict limit. Probably not, however, it also depends on.
The entire course availability and um, so we're looking into options. So let me also say, as I said before, with Carolina away and what's different, students may not think that they would like to um or.
You need to have a dedicated advising support or don't want the covid classes. It is perfectly appropriate for you to register for courses once the update that click referred to earlier. Once that happens, you'll be able to hopefully see which courses are online only which ones are high flex, which ones will have an in person component. So you could theoretically take all online courses in not being the Carolina way program.
Hum, I hope that that is making sense because, uh, my get that how this is. This is very confusing. Uhm, and we don't have all of the information yet, so we wanted to have this just to answer the questions that we could.
There was something else, omm.
Michael, can you get some information about when students will actually be notified of their spot within Carolina away? And if we click that, or if they select they want to participate, are they automatically losing out on financial aid or they automatically losing their housing contract that is coming up a little bit In addition to many questions about being an international student.
Yeah, absolutely. And you know, I think just broadly, I hope that this is come across already, but I want to directly state it that we know that coming to Carolina is a dream for many of you and has been a dream and we again are so excited that you chose Carolina and we're committed to helping you begin this journey in the best way that's going to work for you. Whether that is through Carolina away or residentially. And we recognize 2.

Is there a specific number of students that can do Carolina Away?
Erika Skeel
04:56:08 PM
Online and hybrid classes aren't visible for me at the moment? When will these options be posted?
That what is driving that choice that you have to make is something totally external. You did not ask for your life to be turned upside down by this pandemic and for all of these really roadblocks to happen. And so just know that we're here for you. And regardless of which path works the best for you, we want to support you through that. And we want you to be a Tar Heel, and we want you to really get this experience.
Some of being part of Carolina.
In terms of notification, basically we're not going to cap Carolina away. We are not going to have a selection process. It is simply that if you raise your hand and say you know what Carolina away is the best option for me. Great, there is a place for you in Carolina away. We just kind of based on a survey that some of you did to be admitted. Student questionnaire back in May is how we got to the number of.
Leslie Smith-Moore
04:56:58 PM
Will students pay just tuition and fees for the semester?
1000, that's just how many were kind of guessing out of our total 5000 new students were joining us. We're guessing about 1000 of you will probably end up indicating Carolina away is the best option for you.
Fellow presenters did I hit on the questions that Chloe asked? I feel like I missed something.
Helen Tang
04:57:36 PM
Besides submitting the survey in ConnectCarolina, is there any other steps I need to be enrolled in Carolina Away?
Boyu Liu
04:57:39 PM
If we are taking Carolina away do we still have to pay for school insurances?
OK Yeah, give me the thumbs up. So we're going to go back to the chat then and see what additional questions are coming up. We just answered the specific number of students really. It's open to everyone for whom is available. Oh, I know it. Chloe also mentioned was international students and the questions there. Again, we know that there's going to be a lot of questions that you have about this process. Hopefully some of our FA QS.
Christine Mendoza
04:58:19 PM
Will we lose our housing assignment automatically, or lose merit aid if our cost of attendance decreases?
Um will help, but I'm certainly office of international scholar of students and scholars on campus will be a great resource for you were also working on some more operational details, as it were, that will be sharing, hopefully at the very beginning of next week. I think Cliff might have mentioned this, or maybe it was Chloe, but this is something we're building and we want to do it the right way. We want to make sure that this is really going to work.
Jillian McManus
04:58:44 PM
This is only for new students? Returning students would not be able to be included in the Carolina Away program and just do remote?
For students, and so we're trying to be really intentional about it and make sure that what we're crafting is going to be worth it for you. So as we have, these details were going to keep rolling them out will be updating the website, and the FA, QS, as well as sending out additional emails and other communications as we know more to really help you understand what's going to happen over the next month. Two months.
As we reached the beginning of the semester.
Online and hybrid classes aren't visible for me at the moment. When will these options be posted Cliff?
As soon as possible, so Department San instructors are providing that information to our readers office and they are working hard to manually update our entire fall catalog and so that will be in the coming days, hopefully within the next week or so, and certainly they would like to have that before first year students register an the first group in early July, and so that is their goal. That is what has been communicated to us, and so you should maybe be able to see that.
I'm in connect Carolina. Like I said in the coming days where I think there manually working as quickly as they can, but that information hopefully will be posted soon.
And I just got a note from the experts who say this session will likely shut down right at 5 because that's when it was scheduled for. So again, we just want to thank everyone for participating. Please do send additional questions to Carolina away. I think we will also continue answering these questions just on the off chance that it doesn't turn off on us, but it is likely that the session will end very shortly.
Chloe Russell

We appreciate your questions and thank you for participating! To learn more about our Carolina Away program please visit us at https://carolinatogether.unc.edu/carolina-away/
Thank you again for joining us. Have a great day, and GO HEELS!!
Sorry, I'm trying to see what question we were on next besides submitting the survey and connect Carolina. Is there any other steps I need to be enrolled in? Carolina away. No, just that survey. We will also be sending an email likely next week just to confirm your choices just to make and make sure that how you submitted the survey was what you intended. So you'll also get that confirmation.
What we lose. Our housing assignment automatically or lose merit aid if our cost of attendance decreases so you don't automatically lose your housing assignment, we do ask that once you make the decision for Carolina away that you reach out to housing and then you cancel that contract with them since you won't be living there in terms of scholarship aid. If your cost of attendance decreases, yes.
Your financial aid package scholarship awards may change if it was covering those additional costs, since those costs are no longer going to be part of your fault bill.
Is this only for new students returning students?
Would not be able to be included in the Carolina way program in just two remote that is correct, so Carolina away is just for new students because we recognize that Azure coming into the community. You don't have any other experiences to draw on, and so that's why we've created these specialized learning communities and advising supports really to help people just get started as a Carolina student. If you're a returning student, you absolutely should still complete that survey and connect to Carolina and let the University know of your plans.
And again, we thank you so much. It looks like maybe it continued for an extra 2 minutes, so will take that grace period. But again, thank you so much and please reach out with additional questions and will be posting this recording to the website as soon as we're able to download it. So thank you again and we hope you have a great day. Take care.
